My Right Ear, My Right Thumb, and My Right Big Toe (May 7, 2023)

My Right Ear, My Right Thumb, and My Right Big Toe May 7, 2023

Leviticus 14:28
In Leviticus 14, we read the instructions given to Moses, who gave them to Aaron the High Priest, the instructions for purifying and partaking in an offering of consecration; that means these were the proper preparations, the offerings prepared; and the right people performing a sacrificial offering to God, of separateness, and of holiness. To be in that role, he had to be clean. Not just sweat and dirt, but morally clean. So eight days after he began the ritual...“The priest is to take the lamb for the guilt offering, together with the log of oil, and wave them before the Lord as a wave offering. He shall slaughter the lamb for the guilt offering and take some blood and put it on the lobe of the right ear of the one to be cleansed, on the thumb of his right hand and on the big toe of his right foot. Then the blood was placed on the tip of the priest’s right ear, the thumb of his right hand, and the big toe of his right foot."

Why do you think they were to put blood on their ear? The Hebrew word means to listen and obey. The blood was what sanctified the offering. And not only was it considered holy, but whoever was baptized or anointed by blood, their sins were forgiven and those individuals are also sanctified or holy. And if their sins were forgiven, then the life they now live, they live in Christ. (Even though Christ would not come to the earth for about 1500 years.) This was an Old Testament conversation but we can see how God always has a plan. And that plan would be revealed in the future. And God’s people are to be a holy people and a part of that plan. And, you and I are to be holy. Leviticus 11:4 …”and be holy, because I am holy.”

Isaiah 6:3 "Holy is the Lord Almighty"
Romans 12:1 "Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing God – this is your true and proper worship."

Why the blood on the tip of the thumb? Do you know why? It is the thumb that allows us to hold onto things. And the things that we need to be a part of our lives, we need to hang onto those. And the things we need to let go from our lives, we need to live in a way that if God points out that we need to separate ourselves from these activities… no problem.

What kind of things should we allow God to separate from our lives? (Do you know how many people say…wow…I don’t know) Many, many years ago in a land far, far away I was working in my first career job. I was a jeweler. We sold high end jewelry. One day about lunch time two women came into our store and they were pointing at different pieces on the counter. I was quiet and let them do all the talking to one another. I overheard one of the women say to the other…”Why don’t you put this on your prayer list, the Bible says "He will give us the desires of our hearts”.  And somewhere in the next few seconds I must have lost my mind. With nothing else said, I responded…"Love not the world neither the things that are in the world…if anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him." I’ve never seen such a shocked look as those two women had on their faces. They never said a word. They simply looked up at me in disbelief and without a word turned and walked out of the store. I never told my bosses about that.

The world He is speaking of is not this planet called earth. He is referring to the mindset of the people on the earth. The value system of this temporary dwelling place. As believers we do not share common understanding with most of earth’s residents. Most people think this is a pretty cool place. I think the same thing. I just don’t think it’s as cool as heaven is going to be. And I am certain that this life is better with him than without Him. But this world is our mission field, it is our harvest field. There is nothing wrong in enjoying beautiful mountain ranges, a star studded night sky, or magnificent rivers. There is nothing wrong with enjoying a good meal, as long as everyone gets to eat. There is nothing wrong with having nice clothes to wear, or having a nice home to live in. Just remember those clothes used to be worn by stalks of cotton and a silk worm’s cocoon. And remember that house used to be what clothed the forest till they cut it down and built your subdivision. Everything we have once belonged to someone or something else. And everything we have, will once again, belong to someone else. Remember in life, it's not what you have…it’s what has you.

And then He spoke of the right big toe. I don’t know how many of you have considered the value of your big toe. But your big toe is an important part of life.  In the New Testament, it uses the expression to mean …”to walk”.In the Old Testament we read where Enoch and Noah walked with God. God's call to Abraham was ‘walk before me and be blameless”. In the New Testament we read “If we walk in the light as He is in the light we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ cleanses us from all unrighteousness.

The ear is to hear what God says…to listen to God and obey
The thumb allows us to hold on to what is holy and right
And the toe allows us ….to walk.

Sanctification… total surrender of our lives to God.`
Sanctify is to set aside for a holy or godly purpose.

May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. The One who calls you is faithful. And He will do it.
1 Thessalonians 5:23-24

And God Said (Sermon Was From 04-30-23)

Good morning. I want to thank my family for their love and support and I want to thank all of you for your love and support, and for all the prayers and well wishes that you have shared with me. Today I begin a new year in my life and I am glad to be doing so.  I am thankful for the love of God and his place in my life.

This morning I want to share with you the beginning of a new series. It is not my original completed work. The origin of this is from a mentor that I have had at various times in my life and he has probably had more influence on my understanding of God and how He works in the lives of men, more than any other teacher, pastor, or professor I have ever known. To be able to understand the truth means that we also have the ability to understand and discriminate what is not truth. What is not truth, we call heresy.

We are going to begin this morning at the beginning of the book…The holy book we often call The Bible. We are going to look at the first book called Genesis, chapter 1 – 3. If we are going to understand God and how and why He works, you can never understand Him without these first three chapters in Genesis. If you and I do not understand these first three chapters, our thinking is open to the teaching of heresy. Now there is an advantage to knowing or understanding heresy. If you know something is heretical, it enables you to know the truth. Some would say, it doesn’t matter what you believe, but how you live your life that counts. The error is that you live exactly how you believe.  What you believe in your head will soon translate into the way you live your life.

Now when we read the first three chapters of Genesis we often get lost in our understanding of science. Not that science isn’t important, it's just not the subject of Gen. 1-3. The writers of Genesis knew nothing of science as an intellectual discipline. Science is built upon repetition. You throw up a ball and it comes down. You throw up a ball and it comes down. The next day we do the same with a ball, and it still comes down. An observation is made, a hypothesis is proposed, and a theory is born. Science cannot deal with a one time event. If there is no repetition, there is no pattern. If there is no pattern there is no law. Science cannot deal with one time events. So, science cannot explain a virgin birth.  Science cannot explain a resurrection from the dead. That’s why God’s world was to be studied and understood, not worshipped, or revered.

Genesis 1-3 has given to us life’s answers: theological, philosophically and religiously; but not scientific or naturalistic. The deity and sovereignty of God aren't as clearly illustrated anywhere else as in creation. We learn in Genesis…. That in the beginning there was GOD  and NOTHING else existed before God.  Then there was God plus something else.  “Let us make man in our own image.” This does not make the nature of God necessarily individualistic, but it is social. In the Muslim concept of God and the Jewish concept of God, is that he was simply one. Scripture says that God is love, that his very nature is love. But if He were the only one who existed, whom did he love? Is love even possible with a singular individual in existence? No, for love to exist, one needs to love another.

In Genesis 1, we read that in the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. This is different from every other cultures’ account of creation. In Babylonian creation, “In the beginning, two Gods were.” Why? In the natural world you must have a male and a female. For the Babylonians it was Apsu and Tiamut. In the beginning…All creation stories begin with at least two individuals. The Hebrew God was the only God who was an individual because He was above nature.

I was staying in a hotel one evening years ago and it was not a particularly nice hotel, but the price was right and it was time to brush my teeth and call it a day. As I got ready to brush my teeth I noticed a cockroach in the tub. He was trying to climb the sides of the tub to escape. Every time he would get About ½ way out, he would lose his footing and go sliding back to the center of the tub. By the time I finished my teeth and my meds I looked over to see if he had made it. He hadn’t, and worse than that, he was on his back wiggling his feet like crazy and I realized there is no way he is getting out of that tub unless someone or something bigger than him helps him. I was just sort of talking to the Lord and I said that roach is a lot like me. I can’t ever get out of my problems if You don’t help me. You see we all need someone bigger than we are to get us out of our troubles. And that is true for all humankind. We can’t make it on our own.  Most of us think we can, but that is not reality. Humans were created to live in relationship with God and with one another.

Initially God made Adam and Adam had some characteristics that were similar to God but not an equal with God. And Adam was lonesome for someone who was like him. Why, because he was created for relationships. So God put him to sleep and God took a rib from Adam, and Adam woke up and met a girl named Eve, and from their DNA  mankind was born .  And Adam and Eve lived in relationship with God. Until one day when Adam and Eve disobeyed God’s instruction, and everything changed. Never before had anything or anyone acted in a manner contrary to God until this day. On this day all of nature changed. The future of mankind changed. Nothing was or would ever be the same. Your life changed that day. My life was changed that day. From that day forward life on earth has never been as it was before sin entered the world. And though God has opened the door for all of man’s issues, man will not accept God’s plan. So man continues by his own efforts to find a way to move back into a relationship with God. Unfortunately, it is not man’s plan that brings us to God. It is only God’s plan that brings us back to him. Have you taken time to look over what God did to bring you back home?

The Joy of Clean Dishes in Your Life / Living the Christian Life

How many of you have chores to do at home?

How many of you have the chore of washing the dishes or loading the dishwasher?

Did you know that Jesus knew something about washing dishes.

Matthew 23:25 …You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. Blind Pharisee! First, clean the inside of the cup and dish, and then the outside will also be clean.

You see the people Jesus was speaking to were people who were masters at looking good on the outside, but inside of their hearts there was darkness. Their words seemed decisive and condemning. Other people just didn’t know how to be holy like they were. 2000 years later people haven’t changed much. I guess I should ask you, how many of you have ever washed a dish? Now when you wash a dish, do you leave the remnants of food or drink that was on the dish and put it back in the cabinet without washing it completely?

I did see it in a cowboy movie one time. It was a western and they were on a cattle drive. When they were ready for lunch, they rode into the cook’s wagon. The cook passed out the plates. To their surprise and dismay, food particles from last night’s supper was still on the plates. When they asked the cook why he didn’t wash the dishes, he simply replied, "Good enough to stop eating on, then good enough to start eating on." (I don’t support that perspective) There are a lot of people who believe a lot like that cook. I’m good enough. I have friends that like me. I’ve been to church. To quote Jesus again…”there are none good.”

One of the greatest lies told to all of us is, don’t worry about it. Nobody is perfect. Now while you might say this about some things. But in your spiritual life, you better be careful using that statement that it doesn’t become an excuse for sin. In another passage Jesus said to his disciples, “you be perfect as I am perfect”. Perfection is not a performance; it is about the totality of our commitment,  and the attitude of the heart must be, to the best of my ability and understanding, I will fully live in obedience to God. If we willfully sin against God, it is not ok. He even says that those who love him keep his commandments. In 99% of the things we face, we know the right thing to do. If you practice spiritual failure, I believe you will perfect it. But we weren’t created to live in spiritual failure. The gift of the presence of the Holy Spirit changes everything. The Holy Spirit empowers people to live in the knowledge of the will of God. He lives in us to show us the direction we should go and gives us the power to fulfill God’s will in our lives. He purifies the soul and ministers to us, teaches us and works through us.

Does that mean we exchange our clothes for robes and wear halos on our heads? We look a lot like everyone else. What He changes is our heart. The disciples experienced this in their day. They had left their homes and businesses to minister with Jesus. We know they were committed to Christ. But they weren’t always everything they could have been. They were fearful. They were petty. They misunderstood a lot. More than once Jesus had to correct them. One time Jesus said, how long do I have to put up with you guys? He sounds a little exasperated. But after his death he met with them and told them that they would receive the Holy Spirit and he would empower them to live a life of complete devotion to Him.

But you will receive power after the Holy Spirit has come upon you. And you will be witnesses for me in Jerusalem, and Judea, Samaria, and to the very ends of the earth. Acts 1:8

These disciples began to share with their world what God was doing and had done through the gift of His son. And the world was beginning to change. In case you don’t remember, one of his disciples had already committed suicide. And ten out of the remaining eleven would die a martyr’s death. And the 12th, whose name was John, was boiled in oil, but he didn’t die. So they put him on an island with few resources and left him there for years. When they returned, somehow he was still alive. He would go to live in Ephesus until his death by natural causes.

If you have never invited the Holy Spirit into your life, today is a good day. Some might say, I got the Holy Spirit when I asked Jesus into my life. Well that’s fine, but I’m talking about when did the Holy Spirit get all of you? It’s one thing to ask for our sins to be forgiven but it is another, for a believer whose sins are forgiven, to be filled with the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is involved in every part of the coming to life in Christ. He convicts and convinces us of our sin. He gives us the assurance that God has forgiven our sins. He empowers us to live a life of holy devotion to God. Let the Holy Spirit cleanse your heart today. Surrender your life to Him today. Be filled with the Spirit today.

Easter has always been one of my favorite holidays. I never cared much for the hard-boiled eggs, but it was a great day with the Easter baskets and the new clothes and being out of school.  As most of us know, Easter is about something much different. We can’t expect young kids to appreciate what Jesus did for us as much as we older believers have come to realize. There was the awful fact that He—the Lord of glory—gave up His life for us because He loved us. We can’t forget that He rose from the dead so we might have eternal life and salvation. It’s sobering when we realize many people either don’t know, don’t care, or haven’t heard about this wonderful news—Jesus was dead, but He is alive forever!

Let's look at  Luke’s Gospel, chapter 24, beginning with verse 1. Please keep in mind Jesus had been crucified three days before this day, that He had told the disciples repeatedly He would rise on the third day (after He was crucified), and that none of the disciples or other followers really believed He would come back to life. Proof of this is right here in this passage. We begin at verse 1: “But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they came to the tomb bringing the spices which they had prepared. And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. While they were perplexed about this, behold, two men suddenly stood near them in dazzling clothing; and as the women were terrified and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, ‘Why do you seek the living One among the dead? He is not here, but He has risen. Remember how He spoke to you while He was still in Galilee, saying that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.’ And they remembered His words, and returned from the tomb and reported all these things to the eleven and to all the rest. Now they were Mary Magdalene and Joanna and Mary the mother of James; also the other women with them were telling these things to the apostles. But these words appeared to them as nonsense, and they would not believe them.”

There are three things in this text that jumped off the page for me when I was reading. The first one is that these women returned to the tomb. I’ve wondered why. They knew Jesus was dead. They had seen, or at least heard, this terrible news. John, the disciplewhom Jesus loved, and Mary, the mother of Jesus, were there at the foot of the cross (plus a few others, according to John 19:25-27). John, at least, had heard Jesus say, “I will rise again” or words to that effect many times, but he still didn’t catch it—not until later, anyway. Maybe they didn’t know Nicodemus had brought 100 pounds of myrrh and aloe to preserve the body (John 19:39) because, according to verse 1, they brought other spices along with them. Why? They clearly didn’t know, or didn’t believe, Jesus could be alive—not after what He had been through. I won’t go into the details of crucifixion—other people have written and given verbal teaching about this—but we can agree this was the most horrible way to die. We should be glad our Lord Jesus, who was absolutely sinless, absolutely perfect in every way, suffered the worst form of death for us. Nobody can, or should, say they’re too bad for saving—look at Jesus! He died for all, even the worst of us—and the rest of us, too!

So they returned to the tomb at early dawn, which means it probably was still dark when they left their homes. One thing I’ve wondered about is how they intended to get there, leaving the city (Were the gates open?), going up to Mt. Calvary, which is not an easy climb, and probably wondering how they were going to get the guards to let them into the tomb! Matthew said there was a seal on the tomb (Matt. 27:66). So at the very least, the government showed it meant business as far as this tomb was concerned. Somewhere I’ve heard or read that love knows no obstacle. We commend these ladies for their courage and devotion to the Lord Jesus. I wish that we who know He is alive forevermore would show this same devotion these days!

Luke tells us they got a surprise when they reached the tomb! The stone was rolled away, which was a miracle in itself. Several commentators explain the stone wasn’t a small item such as a rock, blocking the door to the tomb. Rather, it was a huge stone, a boulder. David Guzik says in his commentary that it was a circular stone rolled down a track to ensure nobody would break in and steal the body (or other things, it’s implied) from the tomb. He says it would take several strong men to roll that stone uphill so the tomb could be accessed. I doubt these women were that strong. Again, how were they going to get in? The only thing we know is they prepared spices because they did not believe Jesus was going to rise again.

That was the first surprise. Imagine when they see not only the stone rolled away, but they went in and saw two men, according to Luke, in shining clothes! What did the women do? “They bowed their faces to the ground”! Then they heard a perplexing question: “Why do you seek the living One among the dead? He is not here.” I imagine that angel paused for emphasis before he continued, as he said, “He has risen!” This wasn’t all the angel said to them, but it was enough for these ladies to remember Jesus’ words. It was and is promised in Isaiah 55 that God’s Word never will return void or empty. When they heard, they remembered. How much or how often they thought of the messages Jesus preached or conversations with Him we may never know, but this moment of truth we read about here surely gave them the encouragement they needed.

The angel even gave a specific time and message: “When He was still in Galilee.” They remembered! Even if nobody else could recall the message, they did! The Greek verb here is in the passive voice, which means they didn’t actively think about what the angel said. Rather, the thought came to them! I am reminded of that beautiful hymn by Fanny Crosby “Rescue the Perishing,” in which one line says, “Chords that are broken will vibrate once more,” and this definitely happened for these women. However, they didn’t stay there long and apparently didn’t want to waste any time. This was wonderful news, the knowledge that Jesus was not dead any longer, but alive! Luke then says they returned to the place where they were staying. We know from verse 9 that the 11 disciples were there, and the rest, and this is something I’ve never really noticed before. Who were they, the rest of them? We may not know who they were down here, but we will someday in heaven. They, too, had heard Jesus—and they had believed.

Now you would think, I’m sure, that this news about Jesus being alive would be welcome news, right? I mean, Jesus had spent more time with the disciples than anyone else, hadn’t He? Yet, they still didn’t understand! So when these ladies came back from the tomb, they’re telling the disciples all about what they had seen and heard that morning. The rest of them did not believe them at all. Dr. A.T. Robertson in his Word Pictures in the New Testament commented that the words of the women were like the wild talk of someone in delirium or hysteria (paraphrased). Imagine: These women had left the relative safety of their homes, had walked all the way to Mt. Calvary and back, no doubt in deep sorrow regarding the death of Jesus. Now, they’ve returned, and I don’t think they were unhappy over this news! They were rejoicing! They’re probably taking turns, or maybe they’re overtalking each other. (Wouldn’t you have loved to have been there?) Still, the disciples were unconvinced! They didn’t believe a word the women were saying!

Later, they did. Although it isn’t in this particular passage, verse 36) tells us Jesus Himself appeared right there in the very room. He appeared again eight days later, and Thomas gave a true confession of faith, “My Lord and my God” (John 20:28). He made other appearances, too, as Paul later described in 1 Corinthians 15. One day, He’s coming back, this time to take us home with Him. I hope you are ready to meet Him—the Lord Jesus Christ—when He appears again. For some of you, Easter and Christmas are the times when you come to worship. That’s great, and we appreciate you being here. Don’t let it stop at those two days. We want to see you again, too! Maybe you have returned to this church because there is something in your heart that you know all too well—you know things aren’t as right between you and God as they need to be and can be. Today, through the reading of Scripture, perhaps you have remembered things you maybe had forgotten. Please make sure you have things right with God and yourself. This may be the last time you’re able to attend a church service. If things aren’t right, why not make them right today? Our Savior is waiting for you.

When Faith Meets a Challenge

John 11:1-3

Now a man named Lazarus was sick. He was from Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha.  2  (This Mary, whose brother Lazarus now lay sick, was the same one who poured perfume on the Lord and wiped his feet with her hair.)  3  So the sisters sent word to Jesus, “Lord, the one you love is sick.”

After hearing this Jesus waited two more days, then Jesus told his disciples we must return to Judea. Our FRIEND Lazarus has fallen asleep, I am going there to wake him up. Jesus comforted the sisters of Lazarus, Mary and Martha. Jesus loved Mary and Martha.

Martha told Jesus “Lazarus our brother is DEAD.” 25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die;    and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?” 43 Jesus called in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen, and a cloth around his face.

I. Lazarus was love by Jesus

II. Jesus said “Let us to go our friend, he has fallen asleep. Jesus knew the need of Lazarus even though he was not present.

III. 11:14 Lazarus is DEAD. 16 “Then Thomas (also known as Didymus[a]) said to the rest of the disciples, “Let us also go, that we may die with him.” 25-26 “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?” 43 When he had said this, Jesus called in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” 44 The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen, and a cloth around his face.

1. You and I go through times of suffering.

2. What are we to do: PRAY. The Father knows….God knows what we need when we don’t have a clue.

3. Death of a body is part of every life. Faith in God brings a new body . . . .a glorified body that will never suffer, one that will live forever in eternity.
